More than 10 Fancy Dress Costumes of Roald Dahl For World Book Day 2019

uckily, we’ve got loads of Dahlicious costume ideas that we’re sure your little one will love. They’ll help you tick this off your to-do list quickly and easily.
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is probably the biggest treasure trove of Dahl-themed outfits. There are so many much-loved characters to choose from! Here are our favourites.

    Willy Wonka

There can’t be many more iconic Roald Dahl creations than Willy Wonka. Every child would love to be in charge of a chocolate factory for a day!

We’ve got Wonka outfits from the classic Gene Wilder film and the 2005 Johnny Depp remake, so the choice is yours.

    Charlie Bucket

Whoever said nice guys finish last obviously forgot about Charlie Bucket! He gets Willy Wonka’s factory all to himself just by being the nicest and most honest child in the story.

That’s a great lesson for your little one to learn, and this easy costume is their golden ticket to success for Dahlicious Dress-up Day!

    Augustus Gloop

Now we come to the less obvious characters from the book. If your child is worried about turning up in the same costume as someone else, these are the costumes to try!

We all remember what happens to Augustus Gloop. He’s the first child to get himself kicked out of Wonka’s factory, when he falls in a river of chocolate and gets sucked up a pipe. Here he is pre-swim, wearing the same outfit that you’ll recognise from the films!

    Violet Beauregarde

Violet Beauregarde is turned into a blueberry when she chews a piece of gum that’s supposed to taste like a three-course meal.

Of course, we wouldn’t want to encourage chewing gum at school! This eye-catching purple outfit is the perfect reminder of why it’s a rule worth respecting.

    Golden Ticket

If you don’t fancy your child’s chances of getting ready quickly before school, this Golden Ticket costume could be the answer! Simply pop it over their head and they’re good to go!

Matilda

Did you know that Roald Dahl only wrote Matilda in 1988, a whopping 27 years after his earliest classic, James and the Giant Peach?

It may be one of his last children’s books, but Matilda is still one of Dahl’s best-loved. And of course, it features possibly his most famous villain ever!

    Miss Trunchbull

This horrible headmistress may be scary in the book, but she’s also a really fun fancy dress outfit!

Little girls will have a great time in this terrifying Trunchbull outfit, complete with stick-on mono-brow! All you need to do is tie their hair back into a bun, and the job’s done!

    Matilda

Of course, if your daughter would rather dress up as a goodie, they don’t come much better than Matilda herself!

This cute dress even comes with its own accessories. You’ll find one of her treasured books, and the newt that Matilda memorably manages to tip over Miss Trunchbull using her special powers.

Fantastic Mr Fox

Part of the fun for kids reading Dahl’s stories is watching the hero beat the grown-up bad guys. In Fantastic Mr Fox, he takes down three villains in Farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean! Does that make him three times as good as other Dahl heroes? That’s for you to decide.

This outfit owes much to Wes Anderson’s 2009 film version of Dahl’s classic book. What we have here is a suave, stylish costume that your child will simply love wearing!

As well as the suit, you can have some fun together making your own fox mask with this step-by-step tutorial!

The BFG

The BFG is one of those books where Dahl creates a lot of silly, made-up words. That’s exactly why children love it so much! We can help you find a fancy dress outfit that’s more whizzpopper than snozzcumber!

    The BFG

There’s lots to love about this BFG costume, from the hilariously large ears to the magical dream-catching trumpet. It’s an outfit that will make sure your little chiddlers have a fun-filled day!

    Sophie

Sophie has one of the biggest adventures of any Dahl hero. After all, she gets carried off to a different world within the first few pages! This outfit provides everything your little one needs to turn into Sophie, including a blonde wig, glasses and even one of those horrible snozzcumbers!

The Twits

The Twits aren’t very nice, but that’s exactly what makes them so funny and popular with children! Mr and Mrs Twit are a great option if you have two kids to dress up.

    Mr Twit

This Mr Twit outfit has one of Dahl’s grubbiest characters down to a tee, from his scruffy beard right down to the pot of glue he uses to try and catch birds for his Mrs Twit’s Bird Pie!

    Mrs Twit

If you thought Mr Twit was bad, wait until you meet his wife! From hiding glass eyes in drinks to serving up worms for lunch, she’s easily as awful as her husband.

This costume, on the other hand, is a real winner. It even comes with Mrs Twit’s signature cane!

    Ladybird

Does your child want to dress up as one of the friendly insects who help James escape his evil aunts? We’d suggest this lovely ladybird outfit!

After all, spiders are kind of scary, earthworms aren’t very practical, and just imagine how long it would take to get a centipede’s shoes on!

On the other hand, the ladybird is one of the friendliest characters in the book. Who wouldn’t want to be her? This pretty dress and headband combo is a great way to make that happen.

What is Roald Dahl Day?

Roald Dahl Day is a fundraising event held every year on September 13th, Dahl’s birthday. The Dahlicious Dress Up Day is just one of the ways it raises money for Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity.

What is World Book Day?

World Book Day is another annual event, held on the first Thursday in March as a way to help children celebrate the joy of reading. As one of the best-loved children’s authors of all time, it’s no surprise that Roald Dahl features quite highly here, too!
